Neuromuscular diseases are conditions that affect either the peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction, muscles, or sometimes the nerve roots as they exit the spine. Someone with a neuromuscular disorder may experience one or more of these common symptoms:

      • Numbness
      • Tingling sensations
      • Muscle pain
      • Weakness
      • Muscle atrophy

Northwest Neurology providers are committed to comprehensively evaluating and treating patients with all types of neuromuscular disorders, including:

      • Neuropathy
      • Carpal tunnel syndrome
      • Radiculopathy
      • Diabetic neuropathy
      • Guillain Barre
      • Myasthenia Gravis
      • Multifocal motor neuropathy
      • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
      • Inflammatory myopathy or toxic myopathy (polymyositis or dermatomyositis)
      • Brachial plexus
      • Lumbosacral plexus disorders

      Diagnostics

A thorough review of medical history and a physical exam performed by a neurologist specially trained in neuromuscular disorders facilitates timely diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders.

When needed, advanced diagnostics are utilized including:

      • Electromyography (EMG) / Nerve conduction studies
      • Laboratory testing
      • Skin biopsy to evaluate nerve fiber density
      • Genetic testing (since many neuromuscular disorders can be inherited)

      Treatment

Treatments for neuromuscular disorders involve a comprehensive and integrated approach. The specialized neurology team at Northwest uses an array of treatment protocols including physical therapy, oral medication, and infusion therapy.

In recent years, research identified new treatment options including more targeted treatment with monoclonal antibody therapy. These treatments are often better tolerated than suppressing the immune system with traditional agents like prednisone.

Once a treatment plan has been initiated through a collaborative approach with the patient and neurology team, patients are monitored closely for a clinical response and side effects. Testing may be done during treatment to help monitor progress.

      Clinical Trials

Clinical research for conditions like neuromuscular disorders is made possible through patient volunteers, trained research staff, and highly qualified physicians. These trials lead to treatments that help to save lives.

To learn more about the criteria for such research, please contact the Northwest Neurology Research Center.
